CAES costsThere are theories to make caverns in big salt layers for compressed air energy storages. This is to balance the wind energy. How expensive can a CAES be?At new projects is an efficiency of 70% assumed. By the lower efficiency compared to lithium batteries are maximal costs. At higher costs, the CAES is not economic compared to lithium batteries. Because this storage is mainly for the storage of wind electric power, the caculator has as default value 13 Cent per kWh, the tariff in Germany for offshore wind power. Is every place for wind energy equal? No, the best places are used first. When because of the lower storage efficiency, more wind power plants have to be built, so the last ones will be build on the worst places. The electric power purchase could be more expensive because of this. |
